Don't be a Neighborhood Burglar's Fool!
As much as we don't like to think about it, burglaries are an extremely common occurrence. They happen to everyone, no matter who they are or where they reside. Nobody is completely safe from the pursuits of a determined burglar, but there are some things that you can do to make your home and your possessions unattractive as potential burglary sites.
Home security is a very important issue to help you protect your family and your possessions from any attempt at theft or damage. Many very effective methods have been developed over the last few years to help reduce the chances that your home will become a burglar's target, and another break-in statistic.
To apply these methods, you'll need to think like a burglar who is considering an intrusion on your home. Look around your home for possible things that may be considered an invitation. Remember, the easier it is for a burglar to break in to your home the more likely it is that it will happen. A burglar isn't going to choose the most difficult invasion just for the challenge. He or she is in it for the money they can obtain from selling your valuable possessions to shady dealers. They want money for free, which means that they're going to take the easiest path. Therefore, the more difficult you make it for a burglar to get in and out of your home quickly and easily without being spotted, the lower your chances of ever having to deal with them.
Among the most effective home security methods is still a neighborhood watch program. Not just the name and the signs, but an actual participation among the neighbors in a street or a specific area. This means that you and your neighbors will police your own homes and watch out for any suspicious behaviors both on your property and on the properties of others within your sight. This is also helpful if you are going to be away from home. You'll know that your neighbors will be on the lookout for anyone staking out your property. Along with your effort to cancel your newspaper, have your mail picked up or held at the post office, and put on timed lights to make it appear as though you're home, you'll have the added assistance of actual human eyes ensuring the safety of your property.
Remember that a timer isn't just useful for lights. You can also use it for other appliances such as a radio or television set. If these electronics can be heard from outside, it gives the impression that someone is inside using them, even when you aren't there.
Another important practice that is often overlooked is to keep your tools locked
in a shed or garage. This includes ladders that would allow burglars to enter
through upper windows that may have been left unlocked or open. By making your
own tools unavailable, you aren't handing the burglar a "key" to your home. It
forces the burglar to have to bring his or her own tools, making for a much less
inconspicuous job, and a challenge to carry away any "loot."
Essentially, the trick is to make a burglar's job as difficult as possible, and the odds are that he or she will pass you by and go somewhere else that offers less resistance.
