Smart Budgeting for the Holiday Season
Gifts, decorations, food and visitors can be quite a financial strain without the right planning. Do it right this year and get the most out of the holiday season!
It's the time of year that is best known for bringing everybody good cheer and good times. However, these festivities are all too frequently the case of a heavy debt burden once the new year has started. Fortunately, though, it doesn't need to be this way. The trick is to take the time in advance to plan your holiday season spend wisely, and over a period of time - instead of all at once and in a rush.
The earlier you start your holiday planning, the less likely you'll be to break your budget. Though gifts are usually among the top expenses of the season, they're far from the only expense. Decorations, entertainment, food, gift wrappings, greeting cards, and even long-distance calls can all add up very quickly if you haven't taken them into account.
To help you stay within your budget this year, use the following tips to your advantage:
Start off your planning by creating a budget. Indeed, it'll be the least fun part of your planning, so why not get it out of the way. It will make you feel less like a scrooge later on while you make your purchases. This will also help you to make sure that you haven't forgotten anyone on your gift-buying list. You'll also find that with the added thought and time, you're much more likely to get the perfect gift, at just the right price for each of your recipients.
Try to anticipate the types of wrappings, cards, food, entertainment, tree ornaments, decorations, travel expenses, and other bills that will need to be paid. Go over your records from last year to try to remind yourself of anything you may not have remembered.
Try to reduce the number of gifts that you will be purchasing this year. Instead of trying to buy a large number of gifts, follow your budget, and start shopping ahead of time so that you'll be able to buy a few very good gifts, instead of a whole pile of mediocre ones. You can also reduce the number of recipients you need to shop for by participating in a gift exchange. It can be a lot of fun, especially if you make the recipient guess who the gift giver is! It will keep the spirits of the family bright, without the heavy financial costs.
As with gifts, there are likely a large number of people to whom you usually send holiday greeting cards. To reduce these costs, there is a terrific way to send the same greeting without any expense at all -- e-cards! There are hundreds of free e-cards out there available to anybody with an email address. By using this option, you wish your friends and family good cheer, without paying for the cards, envelopes and postage.
Remember, this time of year is about being happy and being together, not about worrying about the bills that you'll be facing in the new year. Take a step back, do some planning, use the different tools that are available to you to save your money and still have the best holiday season ever.
