How to Achieve Closure in Your Own Life

Closure is the good feeling that you get when you’ve come to the end of something in your life – an event, a relationship, a task – and you’ve dealt with it in a way that you feel positive and can move on in a healthy way.  When you don’t reach that feeling of closure, the result is usually sensations of panic that you have a large number of thoughts and feelings causing you stress and that you feel inclined to simply give up.

The trick to achieving closure with a given situation is time.  You need to allow yourself time to manage the thoughts and feelings that you’re having, and either act on them in a healthy way, or take other actions that will allow you to better handle what you’re going through.

Use the following steps to guide you through this process:

• Clearly identify the issue itself in which you are seeking closure.  It’s much easier to tie up all of the loose ends in an issue when you know exactly what it is and where its boundaries lie.
  
• Know that only you can bring closure to a situation.  Other people involved may not be willing to give you what you need for closure, so you’ll need to bring it about yourself without their help.
  
• When you replay the event in your mind, remember to think about the good as well as the bad that happened throughout. Don’t just focus on the negative.
  
• Remind yourself that you did your best, and that you have learned from your experience.  Even if there were tough or unpleasant times, they are in your past and you know now how not to relive them.
  
• See the negative parts of the experience not as something horrible, but signs that guided you to the right path – the end to which it came.
  
• Know that everything in life as a cycle and that everything must end at some time or another.  Some things you will outlast.  Other things will outlast you.
  
• Perhaps most importantly, let go.  It has happened, and now it’s time to move on.  Life is moving on, and you need to move on with it.  Try to take what good you can from it, but release the rest of it to the past where it belongs.
