Planning a Career Change

If you have come to the decision of a career change, you will certainly have your own reasons.  Perhaps you're no longer interested in your work and you're seeking something more stimulating.  Perhaps you desire a job that has higher financial rewards.  Maybe your company is downsizing and you are looking for a new job anyway.  The motives for changing a career are innumerable.

If you are looking into a career change, there are certain steps that you should take to ensure that you're doing it properly, planning things effectively, and not just jumping into something new, completely unprepared.  

A career change is an extremely important decision and shouldn't be taken lightly.  It should be done slowly, with a good amount of thought.  The following steps can be very helpful in assisting you to make the right career choice at the right time.

• Assess what you like and don't like in different hobbies and career options
  
• Research new career possibilities in greater detail
  
• List your skills and identify those that are transferrable among different industries
  
• Look into your current training and education, and consider updating, upgrading, or gaining certifications that will qualify you for new desirable opportunities.
  
• Network to get your name out and open the door to additional opportunities.
  
• Gain experience in the desired career through volunteering, memberships in organizations, and education.
  
• Find a mentor who can guide you.
  
• Decide whether you want to change your career within your industry, or change industries as well.
